Unreliable Narrators

One thing that I think needs to be talked about more is that Rey narrates the whole sequence with the mirror and the cave. We were seeing what she was telling Kylo happened in a movie that went out of its way to point out that there are unreliable narrators. Do I think this means that they’re related? Maybe. Maybe not. It also goes out of its way to point out that the Force isn’t about bloodlines and reestablish Yoda’s vision of the Force.

For my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere! Yes, even between the land and the ship.

I am intrigued by the Light Mother/Dark Mother idea put forth in the video in The A.V. Club’s article. It’s, frankly, a better story idea than the Jedi buying a slave boy and letting his mother remain a slave because they somehow can’t afford to free her despite all their shiny ships and giant temples. It makes for an interesting story and is on par with the fan theory that Padmé had an affair with Obi-Wan. I mean, if given the choice of Ewan MacGregor…er Obi-Wan and Anakin, Ewan MacGregor will always win. Always.

The A.V. Club: This Star Wars fan theory argues that The Last Jedi is lying about Rey’s parents.
